It's a Kind of Evolution

It’s really funny to look at some of our top box office stars and remember where they came from. Tom Hanks was a cross-dressing guy on Bosom Buddies. Leo DiCaprio was a delinquent on Growing Pains. And Johnny Depp was a baby-faced under-cover cop on 21 Jump Street.
Mmmm, Johnny Depp. He’s just one of those actors that can pull off so many roles. I loved him as the sensitive and off-beat teen in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. You really just wanted him to find someone to understand and love him. Although I’m not really sure what it said about my fair state…
I think, though, that my favorite Johnny Depp film is Finding Neverland. It’s just so far removed from the characters you are used to seeing him play. Depp plays J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, and in this movie you see him befriend the boys and their mother that inspire the classic story. It’s such a touching movie, one of my favorites of all time.
I do have to say, though, that one of my favorite movie quotes does come from Johnny Depp in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie- “But why is the rum gone?” Just that line and I can picture Capt. Jack Sparrow staggering to the fire as Elizabeth throws another cask in. Never fails to make me smile.
With his new release, Sweeney Todd, Depp is back to his trademark dark characters- and partnering again with Tim Burton. Sweeney Todd is the story of a barber who kills his victims with his shaving razor and then has them baked into meat pies. Oh yeah, definitely Burton/Depp material.
There are some great trailers if you visit the official Sweeney Todd movie site. You can also visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace for extra info. You really need to check it out.
