How I feel about Health Insurance
>> Wednesday, September 26, 2007
This post on TCS pretty much sums up my thoughts on healthcare insurance in America.
First, change the tax structure so that it's a personal deduction instead of a corporate one. Your job shouldn't determine your coverage. You as a person should.
Second, let people choose their own coverage from the vendor of their choice. You know what you want. Do you want higher deductible and lower rates or vice-versa? Do you want an HSA that invests your money and builds over time, or do you want to give your money over to someone each month and have your coverage stop when you stop paying? It should be your choice.
Third, keep the government reporting down to a minimum...just enough to make sure epidemics get spotted early and to capture the data needed to catch trends and abuse. The administrative overhead required to keep the government happy drives up costs by 20% to 40% depending on the state and entity.
Fourth, reduce government involvement in anything that competes with the free market. The free market can supply it cheaper and quicker than the government. Use it.
