Some of the Country's Smartest Minds Discuss the Economy
>> Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Doug and I talk a lot about the state of the US economy. And there is a lot of blame focused at our President. I don’t know how many people realize that it’s actually our Congress that holds the purse strings here in the US. You know… the democratic congress that promised change when they took over the majority 2 years ago.
Well… We got change. And, really, it’s our own fault for not reminding our elected officials sooner that they work for us- We The People.
As you all know, Doug and I have been taking a financial course and have been learning to manage our own money wisely and get out of debt. I honestly believe our elected officials need the same type of training. Maybe if they could learn to stay within the federal budget and not borrow from other countries and “pots” of money we wouldn’t be in the mess we are. It seems like a daunting task, I know. And it will take years for them to get us out of the mess we’ve gotten in to over the past few decades. But it can be done, of that I’m sure. It just means cutbacks in unnecessary spending. Things like medical and educational coverage for illegal aliens would have to go… And so would unnecessary spending (bridges to nowhere and bio-domes come to mind)… And people might have to start relying on themselves a bit more instead of expecting the government to bail them out every time they screw up or something bad happens (and not a moment too soon, in my opinion)… Basically our government needs to handle the necessities: protecting our borders and maintaining our roads. Period. Everything else is cake.
Of course that is only my opinion. There are people who are smarter than me (like Warren Buffett, Pete Peterson & Dave Walker) who have much more thorough ideas. And you can hear their thoughts in one place and see the documentary I.O.U.S.A. on August 21 in theaters nationwide. Check out this preview:
The showing is presented by Fathom Events (which did a great job with the Glenn Beck tour I saw a few weeks back) and is broadcast to a comfortable theater near you. I think this is something every American should see. The days of being uninformed are over, people. It's time for all of us to take part.
